Club News

Midsomer Norton held another memorable annual dinner and awards presentation on Friday 10th May 2019. The dinner was again attended by Tom Lovell, Midsomer Norton’s former coach still at Longlevens RFC who play in the Gloucester Premier League.

On the night Joe Button was again awarded the Top Try Scorers award for the second year in a row, with Ben Taylor winning Player of the Year. Other award winners were Hugh Jeffery, Players Player of the Year and Pat Howell Young Player of the Year. Julian Hawkins won the Maurice Carter Cup for his work as Captain of the second team which saw them promoted into Somerset 1. Martin Blackmore was awarded Clubman of the Year for his hard work as Club Coach, which nearly saw the Club promoted again into South West One west

The club has not been idle in the first few weeks since the season ended with plans already well in place for the new season. At the recent well attended AGM the members unanimously re-elected Tom Fear as 1st Team captain. Tom is a product of the clubs outstanding junior section, he plays at lock and back row, and is now in his third season of first team captaincy.

The work to purchase the additional land is on-going with Robin Browning working with the RFU to obtain additional funds. The land which thanks to the hard work of groundsman Geoff Fuller is starting to take shape, nearing playing standard.

Playing round up

The 1st team again led by Tom Fear but now coached by Martin Blackmore built on last year's performances. The team narrowly missed out on promotion having finished in second place to Chew Valley in the league, they lost to Crediton in the playoff game.

The 2nds lead by experienced club stalwart Julian Hawkins, finished off a superb season finishing in first position in their league and the team will be playing in Tribute Somerset 1 League in the 2019-20 season.

The 3rds played in Somerset 3 South, and also pick up games in the Bath Merit table, this will provide games against local teams keeping links with old enemies. Ian Tiley will continue in the role of captain for the coming season. It is hoped that a new influx of youth blended with the existing experience the 3rd team will keep playing a good standard of rugby.

Once again thank you for your continued support and best wishes from everyone at Midsomer Norton RFC.
